Found a rock to rest and admire the view, Connie starts munching on a granola bar, and Kevin climbs up a higher rock and says calmly and firmly, "We have bear!"

Indeed we had a little black bear who truly seemed to be completely unaware of our presence. He was peaceably grubbing and sniffing and eating grass, minding his own bear business about 100 yards off.

Connie got worried and quickly put away her granola bar.

We stood quietly watching Nice Little Bear, who finally figured out we were there. He did exactly what you hope a "trail bear" will do - he walked deliberately away from us, up a little rise towards some trees. When he got to the edge of the woods, he looked back one more time, decided we couldn't see him any more, and took off running. I was glad he could preserve his dignity by pretending he wasn't scared of us, as long as he possibly could ;-)
