Granite Head, Now Yes the elk are hunted on the elk refuge in the late fall and the early part of the winter. I think the hunting season on the refuge extends to about the middle of December or so. The late fall hunting season has been quite controversial as of late. The refuge managers say this is done primarily to help in the control and maintenance of the elk herd numbers.
There was a recent article in the paper on this. In the article it talked of how some Elk came onto the refuge when some hunters were about and then quickly went over and up into the Nat'l Forest on the east side of the refuge. The elk have learned it seems of this hunting season and stay in those areas much of the time now at this time where they cannot be hunted. But once it is over, they flood into the refuge.
Wishing You the Best!
