Much like everyone else I've used Verizon since Verizon was a youngster. Much like others I've been forced to use Slough just like others. One of my earlier phones had an external antenna port and I spent a few bucks on a magnetic mount antenna for the rooftop of my vehicles/motorhome etc. That effort gave me an extra bar or 2 but the areas were limited.
Now for the unconventional part: This year l'll be using a Straight Talk wireless Home Phone. Before you begin ROFL let me tell you the Straight Talk uses Verizon towers. Their base unit has an antenna, a rechargeable battery with about 4-5 hours standby time, a 12 volt DC port that easily adapts to a cigarette lighter supply. Because it has the external antenna port, you can benefit from an external antenna (see above).
Base unit will run you $100 bucks (I bought mine on sale for ($40) a cheap plug in phone will cost $5. Very best thing:
$15.00 a month unlimited nationwide. No text ability.
I used it all winter traveling in Southern Utah and it works every bit as good a wife's Samsung cell.
Their customer support is poor at best, but if you can think ahead of time you'll be fine.
Sorry John for the extreme use of bandwidth...
