Stay one day at Old Faithful, one day at Lake or Canyon and one day at Mammoth. If you stay at an entrance city you will be spending some time driving in and out of the park rather than staying right in the park and enjoying what is in the area for a day. I really like staying in the park in the local area and spending more time walking and short hikes than drive with the crowd on visitors. If your children are interested in wildlife, you can't beat Lamar Valley in the northeast area of the park and Hayden Valley south of Canyon. I hope that help a little.
