Now, sitting in the Burger King in Billings, the question for me and the girls was what to do with the rest of the day? I gave them two options: continue on to Bozeman and visit the museum like planned, or go over the Beartooth Highway, into Yellowstone, across the northern part of the park, out through Gardiner, and up to Bozeman that way. Lissa, who until now had never been west of St. Louis, thought a mountain highway sounded pretty cool, so we went with the Beartooths.
A couple hours later we were through Red Lodge and on our way up the series of switchbacks that mark that end of the highway. A little ways below the Rock Creek Vista overlook we started encountering some decent snowbanks along the roadside, so we stopped so the girls could investigate this unusual June phenomenon. (Unusual for Ohio, anyway.)
