When we were sufficiently worn out from tromping up and down the terraces, we grabbed a quick snack and then drove up onto the plateau to the south, parking at one of my favorite viewpoints in the Swan Lake Flats area. The hope was for a decent sunset over Electric Peak, although when we arrived things didn't look promising: the low and dark clouds had returned, essentially lowering a lid on the sky. Nevertheless we waited for close to an hour just in case--you never know when the clouds might open up for a few moments--but on this occasion luck wasn't with us--all that happened was that it got dark. So, we headed back down through Mammoth to Gardiner and got things packed up and in the car. We would be leaving early the next morning for several days in the Tetons.
