...if everything goes well? Does the child respond well to different smells?> How about sound tolerance? Which route are you coming in? Do you have any idea if the child notices cliffs and dropoffs? How about walking outdoors...will he have a problem with boardwalks and asphalt trails?
I mention the last because I once went to the field with some children who had never walked on wild grass before, only mowed lawn. Their parents wound up having to carry them, they had crying fits, and a perfectly miserable time. But if smells don't bother your grandson, I can see him getting hooked on hydrogen sulphide (the rotten egg smell at Mammoth,the bridge over the Yellowstone at roosevelt, and Soda Butte), and wanting to come back every year.
