was surprisingly dry. We expected that lower area would be muddy and as slick as the icy shaded areas from the back country site until you reach the area between Turkey Pen and Rattlesnake. I had predicted that the mud would cake on the boot soles and make them feel like stilts, but that didn't happen.
The next day we hiked past the Blacktail Deer Creek cabin and saw a moose in the willows in one of the small stream tributaries east of the creek. Apparently there have been three hanging in that area this winter.
