Like this extremely low-flying tracking plane we were seeing regularly around the Slough Creek-Lamar River Bridge-Little America area. It must be a real joy to buzz around the territory from what looks like well less than 1,000 feet, and, from photos I've seen by retired Yellowstone pilot Roger Stradley and his passengers (see link), I'm betting they're seeing a lot of action that we grounded souls miss. The tracking planes use various methodologies for tracking and research including reading collar signals, visuals, and photos that are later printed to get accurate counts of herds for example.

We haven't been back to the park since June, in large part because of other cool stuff like our first trip to gorgeous Glacier NP in 15 years, and it's OK because the park is crowded and smoky at this time of year. But we'll get back soon, with luck, in to catch what's left of the elk rut.
