Thanks for the clarification. That's a long ways away from where I was thinking. Ironically, I have had a number of photographic encounters with lone black bears in that area, while hiking segments of the old Howard Eaton trail, as well as Blacktail Plateau Drive, in the spring, before the road opening. I've never encountered a bear with cubs in that area, or, for that matter, over on Mt. Everts or to the south around the Upper Blacktail Deer Creek drainage. That might have something to do with the abundance of open country, and lack of thick forest. To the west, above Mammoth, around Bunsen Peak, the Beaver Pond Loop area, and Terrace Mountain, you see lots of moms with cubs. To the east, over in the Tower/Roosevelt area, we also see lots of mothers and cubs. The relative security afforded by thicker forest is common to both areas. Moms feel a lot better, when there are lots of trees around for their cubs to climb if threatened.
