I replied to your post on TripAdvisor and will do so here as well. The NPS changed the wording in the Code of Federal Regulations to explicitly forbid foot travel in thermal areas that do not have official established NPS trails.
This is a MAJOR change in policy and it started to be enforced when the park opened this spring. The old wording had wiggle room for interpretation; the new wording does not.
So Crater Hills and many other back country thermal areas are now off limits to all visitors. Only scientists with valid research permits for a specific area can now legally travel to these areas.
