That is such a stunning image!

I'm guessing this was taken a "little" ways north of your usual stomping grounds, like maybe the Churchill area. Those black spruce are classic boreal forest dwellers.

Since relocating to Alaska, I've only had one really good look at the aurora, and that was out the front window of the first house we lived in. Now, we live in a house that faces the wrong direction, and we have street lights complicating matters.

Aurora watching has gradually become big tourist business up Fairbanks way, with direct flights coming in from Asia, filled with folks that buy into a variety of folk beliefs about the phenomenon, including one that suggests a baby conceived under the northern lights will be both beautiful and lucky. Given a number of economic counter currents plaguing Fairbanks these days, this is a serious prop under the winter economy, enabling a number of lodging establishments to remain open year-round.
