There are numerous great all-day Hayden Valley hikes that finished with dinner at Canyon Lodge, Howard Eaton trail sojourns finishing with dinner at Lake Lodge, and Northern Range wanders that were celebrated in Gardiner restaurants or even, the Grill at Chico Hot Springs. My very last Yellowstone hike before moving to Alaska was a rather oddball itinerary that I had waited over 20 years to accomplish, after conjuring it up in 1992, while skiing the Divide Lookout and Spring Creek trail. It was a partially off-trail and "offbeat" walk up to the site of the old Divide Lookout, then bushwhack down the ridge to Pocket Lake, and then across the north end of Shoshone Lake, and up the DeLacy Creek trail. We dined at the Old Faithful Lodge cafeteria afterward. Last August, while visiting Yellowstone on a primarily photo-centric mission, I enjoyed dinners at both Canyon and Lake Lodges after wandering Hayden Valley with fellow Loons. I can picture a dietician or nutritionist analyzing this recounting, and summarizing their findings as "this person has issues surrounding the use of food rewards". Guilty as charged!
I walk you through this trip down Memory Lane to illustrate just how special it can be to have FOOD awaiting you at the end of a hike. Part of what makes it so special is the company of friends, whether they did the walk, supported the effort in one way or another, or simply showed up for the celebration.
Your gracious contribution to this activity will very much serve to enhance the experience for all who participate, and will be a mighty contribution to the "social glue" that binds the Yellowstone Loons.
So, thank you very much. You are wonderful!!
