I was on a 4 night, 5 day trip to Mt Whitney once with a couple of friends and on the second night out, a bear gnawed off the 4" dia. limb of a tree that our food was hung from and ate every last morsel of it, save for a few ramen noodle flavor packets. We'd had a shuttle drop us off at the trailhead, and our car was still two days hike away at Whitney Portal. We begged a little food from a father/son duo who were camped a 1/4 back up the trail and cut our hike time short by a day. Camped above timberline at the foot of Mt. Whitney's west slope, word had gotten around somehow and a guy none of us had talked to brought us over a big pot of the best already cooked spinach pasta for breakfast the next morning, then at the top of Whitney some lady hikers came over and gave us a big bag of the best homemade gorp. When we got down to Lone Pine, we ate the best pizza any of us had ever eaten, and sat in the best hot tub we'd ever sat in at the Dow Villa Hotel.
