There must have been some northwesterly wind recently. Ordinarily, the wind blows generally south to north across Portage Lake. There is a very nice Forest Service visitor center on the north shore, and we typically get to see some of the largest icebergs eventually ground on the shoals along the lakeshore. In early May, we saw one that was about two stories high (above water). The top of it resembled the tail fluke of a whale, when it is diving, and the tail comes out of the water. I would have gotten a photo, except there was a stiff wind blowing copious rain sideways right at us. The portions of icebergs protruding from the water act somewhat like sails, catching the wind, and gradually taking the ice downwind until it hits land (or the Titanic).
