Most folks viewing this hike report will not likely have firsthand experience with this area. As someone who has probably visited Portage Lake a dozen times, maybe closer to 20, I have to tell you that I've only seen blue skies and sunshine on 3 or 4 occasions. Even when the sun shines, there is typically quite a bit of onshore wind flow. For some reason unknown to me, on this particular day, there was just enough wind to hold the mosquitos at bay. There were times while hiking the west side of the pass I would have preferred more wind, just to cool me down. This was definitely not typical May weather this close to the coast near Whittier. I was one lucky dude!
My timing was excellent. I knew the outbound from Whittier tunnel traffic would commence at 8:00 p.m., and I reached the trailhead at 7:45 p.m. I had plenty of time to put stuff away and stage my reserve water supply for fluid replacement while waiting for the tunnel to open. I got in line right around 7:55 p.m. I got to be in the line of passenger vehicles not towing anything. We got to go first. A few lanes to our right was another line, this one for all the folks towing rather large boats on trailers. I watched as people jumped out of their tow vehicles and did some last minute equipment sorting or stowing in their boats. I thought about how these people had likely spent their day out on the water, hunting the wily halibut or shrimp. Then the tunnel opened, and our little procession headed north.
