greywolf,
Do you remember that time, about a decade ago, maybe a bit longer, when Tim, Betsy, and two of their friends tried to do the Bechler through hike in early March? They had to take advantage of the Old Faithful area's winter season still being open, which included the Xanterra snowcoach shuttles from West. They got out to the area close to the north side of Grant's Pass (in between Lone Star Geyser and the pass), spent the night, and woke up to frozen water bottles, thanks to temperatures that were somewhere in the minus 40 or 50 below range. They opted to turn back, which was a wise decision IMHO. Their two friends continued on, had some serious frostbite problems in the Bechler area, and, thankfully, encountered another group that was equipped with a sat phone or some other device that enabled a call for help. As I remember it, one of the fellows lost a couple toes.
I'm just thinking a cold spell like that would do a number on those little sage-dwelling hitchhikers on the Northern Range, even though it might not get quite as cold as the Bechler did years ago. Here's hoping!!
