I've always wondered if select individual bison have vision problems, particularly after having an immature bull go out of his way to charge me, back in 1991. He pulled up short, about 3-5 feet away, after I was yelling at him to STOP. It was wide open country, and there was no way I could outrun him, climb a tree, or do some other "escape and evasion". He just pulled up short, and stood there breathing hard. His eyes looked very strange! They were a solid milky color, which made me wonder if he was blind, or at least seriously vision-impaired. To this day, I believe he had no intention of running into a human, and once he heard the object he was charging making all this human noise, he backed off. Like many Yellowstone mysteries, we will never know exactly what was going on in that bison's head.
