I had the apparently mistaken impression that the feature itself was in an area that was closed. If I'm understanding you correctly now, you're saying that it is not closed, only another area that at one time provided the primary access to it? If so, that's of course a different situation--if there's another "legal" way to get there, I don't have any problem with that. I thought maybe we were talking about some people justifying access to a closed area. My bad.
I don't have any issues with what you termed "snobbery," at least in general. Having relatively little-known spots in Yellowstone (or anywhere else) is part of what makes it special. I like the challenge of trying on each trip to find something "new" to see or do that I haven't done before. Most of those aren't particularly "secret," but it's nice to know that there are places still out there that aren't known to everyone. Make the effort and do some research and you can find them, and that's fine. There are certainly enough "top of the line" features to keep anyone who is visiting for the first time happy.
So does that make those who are reluctant to "share" inside knowledge "snobs?" I dunno, maybe in some sense, but that's not really how I look at it. I think the park should be a balance between spectacular, easily-accessible features that are available to all, and other lesser-known spots that require some effort to learn about and get to. As long as I keep finding something new to do on each trip, I'll be happy. :^)
