Two Weeks of Discounted Registration Remain for 11th Biennial Scientific Conference on the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem
Discounted registration for the 11th Biennial Scientific Conference on the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem ends on September 14, 2012. Conference registration will be available through the conference.
This year's conference theme is "Greater Yellowstone in Transition: Linking Science and Decision Making." It will be held on October 8 - 10, 2012, in Mammoth Hot Springs, Wyoming. The conference will bring together scientists, managers and other decision makers to examine resource challenges throughout the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE) from a variety of perspectives. The goals are to exchange science-based information relevant to management and to identify resource challenges that demand new research.
National Park Service Director Jonathan B. Jarvis will deliver the opening keynote on Monday, October 8, followed by a presentation of films by students in Montana State University's Science and Natural History Filmmaking master's degree program. The conference program is packed with 61 presentations from scientists who work in the GYE, three panel discussions with session authors and high-profile managers from the region, and 61 poster presentations in two sessions. The conference closes with a facilitated panel discussion between three area managers who have taken in the entire conference.
Speaking as the signature lecturers of the conference series are noted botanist Estella B. Leopold of the University of Washington, who will deliver the A. Starker Leopold Lecture; Ian Dyson of Alberta Environment and Water, a leading advocate and planner of resource management partnerships, will present the Superintendent's International Lecture; and noted local author and former Yellowstone park historian Paul Schullery, will deliver the Aubrey L. Haines Lecture.
The program committee consists of representatives from throughout the GYE, including Yellowstone National Park, Montana State University, The University of Montana, Montana Institute on Ecosystems, Wildlife Conservation Society, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Northern Rocky Mountain Science Center, USGS Wyoming Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit at The University of Wyoming, Greater Yellowstone Coordinating Committee, Great Northern Landscape Conservation Cooperative and the National Park Service-Rocky Mountains Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit.
The conference series, initiated in 1991, encourages awareness and application of wide-ranging, high-caliber scientific work on the region's natural and cultural resources. It provides a forum for knowledge sharing among hundreds of researchers, park managers and the general public. These conferences, with the active involvement of professional societies and other institutions, provide a much-needed forum for knowledge-sharing among hundreds of researchers, park managers, and the general public. They attract world-class speakers and are interdisciplinary by design.

NEWS MEDIA INFORMATION: News media planning to attend the conference may obtain free day passes at the registration desk at the Mammoth Hotel to attend conference sessions. The day passes do not cover any meals, so media planning to attend banquets should pre-register for meals only ($100 before September 15, or $125 on or after September 15).
