We had a close encounter of the bison kind this past summer. Late as usual coming back from the first meadow on Slough Creek, we encountered a bison coming up the trail at dead dark when we were about 100 yards from the trailhead. He was not aggressive, just walking up the trail. My husband was in front, saw the beast and gave enough calm (relatively) warning for us to climb over heavy deadfall and put ourselves behind significant barriers in the form of dead trees. Downside was it was very difficult to climb over the trees in the dark, and the bison passed within 12-15 feet of us. It was really pretty frightening. Our little maneuver would have done nothing to slow down a bear. Lesson: quit fishing earlier.
