Hiking in country where wildlife is limited to timid white-tails (timid because we all look like hunters to them), squirrels, bunnies and hawks, while often very pleasant, isn't nearly as stimulating as hiking in Bear Country, and I subscribe to your theory as to the reason why.

There was a superb article on the thrill of hiking in Bear Country in the May-June 2011 issue of Wyoming Wildlife News, Up the Crick, by Tom Reed. It's worth digging up if you can (but I don't think it's on line and I doubt I kept it, alas)
Also, the linked video on the subject is hilarious!
