Every year, the farmer harvests the corn and ships it to a granary, and then every spring he has to fertilize the field again.
Why the fertilizer?
When you remove the ears of corn, you remove the nutrients that the corn removed from the ground.
A dead lake trout is nothing more than some: calcium, potassium, and a hodgepodge of nutrients that all came from Yellowstone Lake.
All kinds of things need those nutrients in the lake, from microscopic life, to insects, to plants and algae, to cutthroat trout.
