A non-Loon friend of mine was driving into the park from Cooke City early one morning, last spring, and witnessed a grizzly stalking a bison in Round Prairie. He got a rather dark photo of the bear, but a bit later, with some early a.m. twilight, he got the drama shot, when the bison bull got tired of being "tailed", turned, and faced his "stalker".
I'm told that the bison stood his ground, facing the bear, until the bear turned and vacated the premises. One might suggest that the bear was trying to get a better look at his quarry, but let's face it. Bison hang out in Round Prairie year-round, and any mature griz in the area has seen plenty of bison bulls. My suspicion is Mr. Bear was trying to appear "big", but it didn't work!
Ya gotta love that bull's tail position. Like the biologists say, "it either means CHARGE or DISCHARGE". I think that bear got the bull's meaning!
For those curious, I think this was photographed in March or early April. I don't think Jim had any human company to observe this interaction.
