Merry Christmas to all you Loons and Lurkers!
I'm in the Park for my usual Christmas visit. It's been pretty cold and wolf watching has been a bit thin, but the beauty of the Park is stunning as always.
Saw Blacktails on Christmas - way far away, but at the end of the day they all stood up and howled for a solid hour! Watched the Junction Butte pack from Bob's Knob at Slough on Wednesday. They seemed happy although quite a few have mange. We tried to find Lamars, but they are still to the east. Then at the end of the evening we spotted a wolf tugging on the frozen bison carcass in Blacktail Ponds (a bison falls through the ice to its death almost every winter)
Then yesterday we had the Blacktails on a carcass opposite the skiers bathroom pullout in lower Blacktail. Lots of elk and bison in the Park, including a late-birth calf in Lamar. Seems to be doing all right, though. Lots of coyotes (happy that there are less wolves this year!) and bighorns have been visible as well.
We are all hoping for the return of the Lamars but it is not a certainty at this point. We think they are finding more food to the east, so that is why they are absent.
Looking forward to what today may bring!
Best to all,
W/D
