Dave,

I'm not familiar enough with West to actually suggest specific spots, but I do know that in SUMMER, there is a lot of open space available in relatively safe places. (Winter is a whole 'nother situation!)

First, if you could get someone from Delaware North to let you park in one of their lots, I think that would be pretty safe. It's an area where very few non-employee locals or tourists go, and there are lots of management employees and security around there.

Other suggestions are essentially people to contact who would be a lot more knowledgeable than me:

1.) Contact the West Yellowstone Chamber of Commerce. They are heavily invested in visitors having positive experiences, and tend to staff with folks heavy with local knowledge.

2.) Talk to the West Yellowstone Police Department. They are the collectors/keepers of crime statistics. They would have firsthand knowledge of where "car clouts" (break-ins) occur most frequently.

3.) You could solicit input from local innkeepers, but be careful that you are talking to an owner or primary manager. The typical seasonal employee at the front desk might give you an answer, just to appear knowledgeable, but they may not have a clue what they are talking about.

FWIW, we left a vehicle for 3 or 4 nights a few years ago, in the middle of the winter, while we went to the Snow Lodge. It was a long ways behind the hotel, like 100 yards or so, and nobody messed with it. I don't worry much about the full-time residents. It's the pot-pourri of seasonals and "just passing through's" that I worry about. They are more a reflection of the national demographic, so in amongst them, there are always a few bad eggs.
