I will toss out here that I did manage to negotiate the entire Grassy Lake Road from east to west in my Chevy Impala back in the fall of 2011 while on a photo safari. There are a couple places toward the eastern end where washouts created ruts that had me pondering the wisdom of my decision. I would not recommend doing it after any sort of precipitation (this includes the risk of showers while you're on the road!) and wouldn't recommend it if you're the sort of person that really loves your vehicle, just in case. It can be done though in a 2WD passenger car (although I've been told I was lucky and the road is "maintained" in early fall for hunter access...so maybe chance favored a fortunate fool). In my case though, the worst sections were doable if you just went very s-l-o-w and scouted your path much like a rafter scanning for the best path through Class IV/V rapids.
