When I left the Murie Ranch, I headed over to Dornan's to grab a sandwich from the deli. Drove to String Lake, intending to have a quiet picnic. Not to be...the parking lot was packed and there were LOTS of people swimming, picnicking, kayaking, etc. I found a spot on shore to eat my sandwich and then drove over to the trailhead to wait.
I sat in the van and read for awhile. Some guy scared the livin daylights out of me when he stuck his head in the passenger side window and said, "THIS looks like an awesome way to travel!" A bit later, two couples walked by. As they approached, I heard one of the men say, "Look at that Chevy. They've got that all jacked up". They looked at the US map on the back with stickers from the states we've visited. One of the women asked why we hadn't been to Georgia yet (they were from GA).
Mort and Steve made it back to the van around 5:45. Just under 13 hours to the top and back. Not bad.
We headed to Colter Bay for showers and some dinner at the restaurant there. Back to Signal Mountain and in bed before 9.
