I paid about $550 but I bought my June round-trip from Chicago to Bozeman in November. If you can get something in the $650-700 for a "three-leg" trip (coming into one airport and departing from another) that's not too bad. But what may REALLY sock you is the difference in rental car price for the same itinerary, be sure you check that out before you buy your air ticket.

Backtracking isn't much of a problem if you design a loop itinerary for yourself. For instance, you could fly into Bozeman (can you get a direct flight to Billings from Chicago? I use United which goes straight to Bozeman in the summer and ski seasons, but always thru Denver to Billings), go into the park via North Entrance to explore Mammoth and the Northern Range area, exit at Northeast Entrance via the Chief Joseph Highway, stop off for a day in Cody (the Buffalo Bill Historical Center is easily worth a day), come back in East Entrance, go down to the Tetons past the Lake area, come back in and head to the western part of the park, enjoy the geyser basins, exit via west entrance and back up to Bozeman for different scenery on the way back to the airport. There are numbers of variations on this, play with your map and see what might work for you. Let us know if you have specific questions!
