You have 8 to 8.5 miles on-trail. Then you are going to have to go 2 miles through the woods. There are no landmarks because there is basically nothing but woods. If you have good orienteering skills you are golden. No problem. One possible way is to orient yourself to a rather prominent meadow which is also the headwaters of a small stream. You can "hand-hold" that stream all the way down to another small, thermally stream that flows into Broad Creek. You can see this pretty clearly on a map. The confluence of that thermally creek and Broad Creek is the main section of Joseph's Coat. There is a LOT to explore down there. All I'm trying to say is that the one area near the confluence is not all there is.

But no matter what, you have to be able to do orienteering. You need map and compass skills

The trail portion is pretty gentle. You'll climb a bit going in. Be sure to refill your water bottles at Moss Creek. It's the best water around there. Oh, and there is a fairly steep portion off-trail to get into JCHS. There really is no way around that.
