I am an amateur too; I shoot with the sun behind the subject and out of the picture. This will darken your subject and brighten the skyline. If you have a photo processor it probably has a black and white adjustment setting. You can use black and white adjustment setting on any picture you have and get the black and white effect. I hope this helps.
