Gardiner is a great place to stay, we stay at the Super 8, breakfast early, then head to Lamar Valley. Hope to get out before dawn breaks.
I have snowmobiled when you did not have to have a guide, now you need a guide which adds to the cost. I have also taken a snowcoach from West Yellowstone to Old Faithful, and I would suppose the driver of ours has retired, but he was awesome, pointed out things, stopped for long periods so we could get our shots, etc.
At this point in time, I would recommend the snow coach.
As far as the car rental, I have no clue, as we drive over in our own vehicle.
It is well worth the winter vist!!!
