Just something to discuss and I'm glad you jumped in here.
If memory serves, the IGBST did just make some changes in how they count. They no longer count outside "the recovery area", whatever that is. This includes not counting mortality either. They made some other changes, just this year.
I seem to remember that just a couple of years ago, they also changed the "multiplier factor"? for estimating cubs born. Does that ring a bell? I can't find it online.
Mattson's expertise is really with cougar populations, but he has published some studies on grizzlies as well. Different critters, but proper statistical analysis is the same regardless of species.
We've just gone through...how many years of the wolf fiasco? I just don't want to see it again with the bears. Is the USFW is going to change the methodology and statistical analysis on bear populations, they better make it an air tight case for doing so.
The Great Lakes lost a delisting on wolves because they forgot that there needed to be a comment period! Didn't think a 2nd one was needed!
No more silly screwups.
