the vent there putting out all that steam is Guardian Geyser, which reverted to steam phase a few years ago. It's easy to remember which is which as it was named as it was the 'guardian of the alcove'. Black Growler is up on that shoulder to the left of Guardian's steam.

Recently Black Growler has been quiet, with occasional splashing, and the hillside between it and the boardwalk has heated up, with a new fumarole there too. The original Black Growler was up near the upper level boardwalk (early road) and the name has moved when the powerful roaring activity moves. It's anyone's guess where that energy shift will end up! My prediction is that the next eruption of Ledge Geyser will actually come out of Black Growler's hole, since the heart shaped structure and lower Ledge area is now dry. Let's hope someone is there to see it. Maybe Gary.
