Going up those switchbacks is a bit of a slog, especially for the people like you mentioned who don't wear decent shoes or boots. I'm always worried somebody is gonna plummet onto me from a switchback above, ha.
That's the steepest section on the whole trail all the way nearly up to Lake Solitude. The last quarter mile to the lake goes up a ridge/moraine and is fairly steep too, but I've told everyone I know is going there that if manage to get to Inspiration Point, you've got some seriously easy walking for a long, long way after that.
