But when people ask where to lodge, I do usually recommend to those staying for more than a couple of days that you split up between two locations (if it's practical). The driving distance from "greater suburban Gardiner" to, say, the Lake area and back, will consume a fair amount of your hours in the park. And be impossibly far for exploring the Tetons (which you should certainly plan to do if you have time). On the other hand, that will also afford lots of opportunities to come across interesting activity - bears are most easily viewed from the road, for example.

Finding two places with kitchen facilities and the other comforts of home that will rent to you for less than a week might be a challenge. But if you want to investigate, I would say stay around Gardiner, as planned, for a few days, then move either to West Yellowstone (for best access to the geothermal features) or to Silver Gate/Cooke City for best access to the wildlife-rich Lamar Valley-Little America area.

OR, better yet, expand your trip to two weeks :-)
