We stayed last year in a cabin out along the Old Yellowstone trail. It was maybe 15 minutes from the park -- over a dirt road -- and we're going back again this year.

For us it worked perfectly, as we have both our married kids and their spouses traveling with us. We really wanted something where we could all stay in the same lodging, and needed something with at least 3 queen beds and 2 bathrooms.

Positives: lovely cabin that fits our lodging needs perfectly, and more economical than 2 hotel rooms (which wouldn't have a kitchen). Close to the northern end of the park, since we concentrate mostly on wildlife watching.

Negatives: dirt road into the cabin is a bit of a pain. Long driving time to get to the lower loop (but we only wanted to do that one day anyway).

Depending on what you're focusing your visit on, it might or might not work well for you. If you want to spend a lot of time in the Old Faithful/Lake area or doing other things around the lower loop, it might be a pain. If you are spending more time around the upper loop, it would probably be fine.
