LINX SUSPENDS PUBLIC BUS SERVICE INSIDE YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK

Officials of the Greater Yellowstone Regional Transportation Cooperative bus providers and transit advocates doing business as Linx -- announced today that due to a lack of funding, they will suspend the Co-op s seasonal public bus operations both inside Yellowstone National Park and between certain gateway communities for 2014. For the past three summers several Co-op providers jointly operated a pilot demonstration called Linx Bus in Yellowstone with the support of park concessioners, local businesses, chambers of commerce, and state agencies. In 2013 the Linx providers added a Yellowstone Gateways Connections service between Jackson,Riverton, Cody, Gardiner and West Yellowstone thanks to an FTA Intercity Bus grant awarded by the State of Wyoming. The 3-year pilot showed that an interconnected bus system could operate successfully inside the park despite wildlife jams, auto accidents, wildfire closures and weather extremes. However, despite increasing numbers of riders and marketing sponsors, total revenues failed to cover operating costs. When WYDOT chose not to renew the Intercity Bus grant for 2014, Co-op officials agreed that Linx pilot operations should be suspended both inside the park and between the Wyoming gateway towns. During this respite, the Linx board of directors is planning a strategic re-orientation of the Co-op s services for its member providers. According to President Arthur Kull, we will refocus on integrating and marketing the fixed-route services that our members already operate in this region. Beyond such planning and coordination, Linx expects to upgrade its online capacity for trip planning and system-wide ticket purchases; maintain its toll-free line for responding to public transportation requests; and expand its range of member marketing services.
