I assume the rationale behind the ban on food is the litter it invariably creates; even the best-intentioned ice-cream cone consumer is subject to having the wind dislodge his/her napkin only to deposit it in the middle of a thermal feature.

Logical or not, I'd be willing to bet 99.9% of geyser visitors are oblivious to the mandate.
