From the thirties pictures, looks like what the sixties crew did was clad the slopes with a granite pavement...consistent with what LL told me. Thanks for digging up the images! Also saw them down below.

For those of you who might want to know, Dr. LL now teaches the course on the Sheepeater Indians at the Yellowstone Institute, and is co-author of the book "Restoring a Presence: American Indians and Yellowstone Park".
