Hayden and I discussed how to remove the hats from the basin and decided that they must use a large pole with a hook or alligator jaws on the end. A ranger just happened to show up walking the basin and we asked him how it was done. Our idea about the pole was basically correct, but it did not work for hats that had blown into Excelsior's crater. He told us until recently there was a guy that used a rope to go down into the crater and retrieve the hats, etc. but he had retired and no one else was willing to try it. So what does happen to those hats? Another steamy pic of a hat in the crater.
