The moose are definitely more visible this year in my opinion than they have been the last four since we returned to the area. We've had good luck from the confluence all the way to the Northeast entrance (and just outside the NE entrance)...the first miles inside the East Entrance (and, again, just outside...the upper North Fork valley has been moose haven this year) and, as mentioned, the "moose meadows" above Mammoth.

The 10,000 figure for elk would be roughly correct. Keep in mind though that 2000 was a peak year for elk during that valley-to-peak-to-valley cycle whereas we're coming off one of the harshest winters in Yellowstone in some time. The elk herd remains at "historic levels" for population.

We've seen herds in the Blacktail Plateau-Wraith Falls corridor, along the Yellowstone near the southern end of Hayden...pretty much everywhere we've seen them in years previous, although admittedly not always in the same size. (10 instead of 25)
