In the photo I linked to below you can just see the end of a log on the right. The road has no shoulder at that point, just a log 3 inches away from the white line. They went over the white line and got the tires off on that log. He veered right down into the sagebrush, probably saving them from a rollover.

The shoulder is really tricky in some places. I got the tires off where the road had broken off into the white line. The AWD and traction control really helped as I was able to regain control.

Bottom line is you have to pay 100% attention to the road in front, and not gawk at animals like me.
