Jim,

Avalanche is a real workout, but well worth the effort. The first mile is through forest primarily, moderately steep, with some curves but not long switchbacks. The transition after that first mile is stunning! You break out of the trees into a small flat area at the base of the upper peak. From there, most folks head up the southeastern ridge. There is a small cluster of stunted trees in that initial pitch, but they quickly give way to nothing but dirt and rock. Once you start up this second mile, you start getting killer views to the southeast, south, and southwest. Once you get on top, you have a 360 view. The perspective on Yellowstone Lake, with the Red Mountains just to the south, and the Tetons further south, is awe inspiring. Most times I have been up there, the wind has been a constant presence. I strongly suggest scheduling your day such that you have the luxury of spending an hour or two just lounging around on top. After all, how often are you going to be treated to the expansive view?

One caution: I would not risk going up there on a stormy day. That upper mile offers little protection from lightning.
