Patti and I travel once a year for our " once a year big trip " we do not have the luxury or income for multiple trips . etc so we plan in advance . We were told , go to Yellowstone at / Memorial day .... when we used to Loon reunion , etc - drawback - not all stores open or roads .. etc , etc . still can be snow .... or warm . the WEEKEND after labor ... thats the secret . most ' kiddo's ' are back in school nationwide this week , where as in the south , we go back first of August , my brother in California does not go back until almost labor day . hence ., so billy and suzy's parents ( metaphor speak )try to plan the griswald family trip in between the time frame above . so honing in is timing , also , every year and season is different , May brings a lot of snow closures still , yet new babies galore .... everything is not open yet . especially blacktail drive ... , animals are not fattened at this time, etc . September , brings the bugling and entertainment galore , the elk are in full swing , the animals are now fatted and fattening up and are in chase for the elusive pine nut I believe , days are crisp and wonderful , scenics ( leaves are close to peak ) or just starting , again varies yearly , from what we have seen , places like in May are now preparing to close for season .... etc , etc . Blacktail is usually OPEN .. love that curvy twisty peace full handful of miles drive ..that is why I have never stayed at Roosevelt , because of their late open in the season , I can only comment on the the Yellowstone by what we ( my wife Patti and I ) have experienced . I could not imagine the droves of people in between the parks summer months ..PS - I have had many of talks with Ballpark for years in person - usually at a supper - in both time frames of the year - ha ha . he knows his stuff. either season for a once a year visitor who trusts the ' tip we were given ' years back has worked for us .
