filamentous bacteria. That's the white spindly stuff at lower right and center left. Believe it or not, that plays a key role in NASA's search for evidence of extraterrestrial life. When a thermal feature containing these archaea or bacteria chains dries up, these strands die, but their calcium carbonate skeletal remains provide evidence of their having lived. NASA scientists theorize that if life evolved on another planet or other celestial object, a fossilized structure similar to what we find at Mammoth might be found, much as we know about dinosaurs from having found their bones.
