albee,

I hope someone updates the NPS website. It still shows the closure. I would love to know how easy it is for winter visitors to access the Grand Prismatic overlook. There is the question of how steep the trail is, and whether the average skier could use their skis to come and go. Can you picture a rookie skier flying down a trail of even moderate pitch, out of control, and colliding with whoever is on their way up? The more I think about it, the more I suspect that skis will have to be left at the bottom. There is the parallel question of whether the NPS will provide some sort of winter maintenance, i.e. shoveling the snow off it or putting something like sand on it if it is even somewhat steep. I tend to compare this situation to that at Artist Point, where you have skiers, snowcoach passengers, and snowmobilers all converging. The trail to the overlook is maintained for foot traffic from the parking lot.

Then there is the question of whether the Xanterra skier shuttle is now dropping visitors off at the iron bridge, the traditional winter access to Fairy Falls.

I would love to see someone who has firsthand knowledge of these questions provide some enlightenment.

Thanks for the heads up. This is definitely good news!
