Traveling Bear,

The "Sit Report", as it is colloquially known, has been around for a long time. It just wasn't made available to the public, for one reason or another. When I worked for the NPS, I had access to it. Since then, friends who worked for the park would send me a copy on occasion. I would love to know why it was held back for all those years, and what the tipping point was that led to taking it public. I would suspect that there was fear of the information being used somehow to facilitate activities that were threatening to personal safety or the resource. With increasing traffic on the trails, and continuing budget/personnel austerity, it could be that leadership determined making the information public would decrease the workload on rescuing backcountry travelers that get in trouble.
