There happened to be 5 of us, but we never checked with any rangers anytime and I never heard of that rule. Going in, we saw a bear across a meadow at tree line far away. Trail skirted to the left past where we saw him, but we made plenty noise, kept together, and never saw him again. I did know the rule of not going into the valley before a certain time. Truthfully, for the distance involved, Turbid Lake was not on my favorites list.
