I'll have to swing in the backcountry office next time I'm in. As it turned out yesterday a rather large party of 15 showed as I was scanning the trailhead board for any evidence of a regulation, so I was able to follow far enough behind so as to not intrude on their day but close enough that I could use them for plausible deniability just in case.
So the happy ending to the story was that, while I didn't go all the way to the lake, I did still get to leave tracks in the dirt and enjoy the valley before soloing my way out when the sun broke through the clouds/haze (passing one more solo and two pairs on their way in, I might add...)
